Goleta Beach

Today is my half birthday. August 19th. Today I am 22 and a half. I wish I could do some sort of celebrating, but I am afraid I'm just too tired for such going-ons. Half birthdays remind me of when in "Alice in Wonderland" they sing "A Very Merry Un-Birthday to You." Half-birthdays are a good excuse for celebrating. I just wish I was in the mood. Maybe I will take a bubble bath and read and paint my toenails... a sort of spa night, if you will.
I can't believe I'm 22 and a half. Sometimes I'm very struck with the fact that I'm not a kid anymore. That I am technically an adult. I'm reminded of this at work when children like Sam (who seriously looks like he could be a Lost Boy from "Peter Pan," he has such a wild disposition about him) tell me that I'm a grown up. Well. I'm not sure how I feel about that. In order to be a grown up, you have to accomplish lots of important things. And gain much responsibility. I don't have much of either of those. I've been alive for twenty-two-and-a-half years!!!! It seems as though it was just yesterday that I, with 12 years under my belt, swam in the waves at Goleta Beach and climbed on the driftwood-constructed fort.
Goleta Beach, or should I say the left hand side of Goleta Beach, across from the slew, had perfect sand, perfect water, and perfect waves, the stuff that surf bunny dreams are made of. Above it, eucalyptus trees lined the cliffs all the way down to Hope Ranch Beach, a private stretch for the privelaged dwellers of Hope Ranch mini-mansions. But I didn't need any of that. Just my lemon juice and sunshine to create beach-blonde locks, Tita my best friend to play in the waves with me, and I suppose our little brothers if necessary. In fact this location inspired the song "Dolphin Savers," the theme song for our little brothers' t.v. show "Dolphin Savers" in which they saved the living creatures of the ocean from whatever perils faced them, be it pollution, great whites, or evil poachers. The lyrics are as follows (keep in mind this was written by two eight year olds):
We're the dolphin savers
We swim the water like real dolphins
We're the dolphin savers
We save the little aquatic animals from
DY-ING! YAH! YAH!
Cuz we're the dolphin savers!
