From Little to Big

I have heard over and over in many-a writing course that one good way of answering the "So what?" question (the purpose to what you're writing) without being too blunt or cliche, is to write about small things, and then from those small things point to a larger truth. This is one of my favorite things to write about. The world can be seen in the smallest, seemingly inconsequential events, objects, or people. After all, isn't it usually the little things that count more to people when it comes down to it?
I think God uses the same technique to speak to His people. There isn't some gigantic neon sign stuck in the sky that blinks on and off, "God exists!" He doesn't walk around on earth and assualt people on the streets to prove that He is real. Instead He lets His people see and experience for themselves. For me, tall green trees and the little sparrows that sing in their branches point to a good God. And the kind people in my life who show compassion and love towards me are examples that He is a real and loving God, not separate from us, but in every little detail of our lives.
Details count in writing, but also in life in general. How dull and depressing life would be if we simply woke up, went to work, came home, and went to sleep; pretty scary cycle, right? Instead I look forward to the small things throughout my day like eating my favorite honey-flavored Greek yogurt in the morning, listening to Travis on my ipod while I wait for the bus, or talking about a good book with a good friend. The little things, like the ones I just pointed out, aren't necessary and essential to our humanly survival. So why do they even exist? I mean tastebuds, musical notes, fiction and human connection-- those basic elements to the things we get joy out of. I think they exist because they point to one very important fact that I wish every person in the world could understand: God loves us.
Its as simple as that. From the little, we are shown the big. Yes, it might be silly to say that I experience God when I listen to a Travis song on my ipod. But personally, I may think its a beautiful song, and in listening to that beautiful song, I experience God's beauty, and am proven that God loves us enough to let us have a taste of His beauty.
Its all around us. He is all around us. So make sure you pay mind to the little things. They are actually signs pointing to something bigger and more important and enthralling than you ever would have guessed.
