I always appreciate carrying on a conversation with a person who knows as much about pop culture as I do... That's Maryann; literally one of the funniest (note the strategically-placed Orca Whale in her photo) and unabashedly honest people I know.
What is your current state of mind?
Reeling. I saw Inception last night and it was phantasmagorical. Sadly, my current state of mind is frequently dictated by the media I'm consuming. One time in a Bible study my 'low' for the week was that a character I loved on Buffy had died.
Which living person do you most admire?
A tie between the 14th Dalai Lama and Bruce Springsteen. Because they were the first people to come to mind. My parents are pretty great too.
What is your greatest fear?
A stranger breaking into my apartment. "Law & Order: SVU" will MESS. YOU. UP.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Cowardice? (I don't even have the guts to say it without a question mark)
What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Insensitivity.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Musicals on DVD. It doesn't matter if I never watch it, I must own it. Because it is a musical. Consequently, MGM has most of my life savings.
What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
I loved Stacey's (discipline) but I can't take hers. So I'm gonna go with purity. There are so many more valuable virtues out there, in my opinion.
Which living person do you most despise?
It takes a lot of effort to despise someone, effort I'd rather spend on liking awesome people. If I'm honest, the person I've probably spent the most time ever despising is a certain pastor of a certain Seattle church (of which I used to attend), for better or worse.
Which talent would you most like to have?
Practically: to be good with money. Ideally: to be a kick-ass singer-songwriter.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
There's a certain over-sized meningocele I wouldn't mind shrinking. Or maybe my deformed uterus? Tough call, these days. In earlier years it totally would have been my ski-jump nose.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Captaining a houseboat for a summer on Lake Shasta. I taught kids how to wake-board without ever having done it myself. And my tan was legendary. I'll never peak like that again.
What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
Fortunately, I don't think I've been to the lowest depths so far in my life, but needles in the spine rank pretty far down for me.
What is your favorite occupation?
I'm a big fan of people who work with dolphins and whales. Did I say a big fan? I meant SEETHING WITH JEALOUSY.
What do you most value in your friends?
A good sense of humor and shameless over-sharing.
Who are your favorite writers?
Madeleine L'Engle, Anne Sexton, Emma Brockes, Tom Robbins, Sarah Brown, and good 'ol J.K. Rowling to name a few.
Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
Han Solo in The Courtship of Princess Leia by Dave Wolverton! I mean... Atticus Finch.
How would you like to die?
It used to be by killer whale, but then I was informed they play with their food. So I'd go for the old in-bed, at-home option.
What is your motto?
I guess the one I had permanently put on my body: "Something's lost, but something's gained in living every day." - Joni Mitchell
