Here's a poem that I've really enjoyed recently:
"Publication Date" by Franz Wright
One of the few pleasures of writing
is the thought of one’s book in the hands of a kind-hearted
intelligent person somewhere. I can’t remember what the
others are right now.
I just noticed that it is my own private
National I Hate Myself and Want to Die Day
(which means the next day I will love my life
and want to live forever). The forecast calls
for a cold night in Boston all morning
and all afternoon. They say
tomorrow will be just like today,
only different. I’m in the cemetery now
at the edge of town, how did I get here?
I am Frederico Garcia Lorca
risen from the dead–
literature will lose, sunlight will win, don’t worry.
...
Ah, I have such a love-hate relationship with poetry. It's mostly the over-analyzing of poetry that I hate. And having stupid people's interpretations thrust upon me. I'm in a Contemporary Poetry class currently, and I don't talk in it because I am not particularly interested in most of the poems, and feel like I don't have much insight to offer.
However, the other day we were analyzing James Wright's "A Blessing," which is basically about a lonely man who has a transcendent encounter with two ponies. I think it is a lovely and sad image, and the poem holds profound meaning. So, excited that I had actually formed an opinion on a poem, I readily offered to read the poem for the class, expressing my admiration of it. But I was soon put in my place. Apparently, all of the students in the class thought the poem laughable, calling it sentimental and weird. I guess the fact that having an epiphany in nature, with horses was weird, but I think it is strangely beautiful. I felt really stupid. But I stand by my opinion. Firmly. And those students are all the more ignorant for not seeing the value of experiencing something meaningful in seemingly simplicity of nature.
They are not "kind-hearted and intelligent," as Franz Wright puts it, by any means... "National I Hate Myself and Want to Die Day." How FUNNY IS THAT?! And isn't it so true that the following day is worlds better?
In other news, I went to the snow this weekend and got to wear snow pants with suspenders. I looked pretty cute, as you can see above.

Allie: I'll stand with you on the James Wright poem. "A Blessing" affirms the lonely beauty I know exists on this earth. Your classmates probably wouldn't know what to do with themselves if they happened upon two shy ponies, but you would!
