The Ridge

On Saturday, it was beautiful and warmish in Seattle so we walked up to Phinney Ridge (stopped at Prost! first and had mugs of beers outside) to try the newest pizza joint in the hood called The Ridge. Josh and I are hard core pizza lovers. So you better take our words for this: We loved it! We got house-made turkey meatballs on top of ours. So delicious. Great prices too. We shared a caesar salad and a half-carafe of wine as well.

Here are Josh's thoughts:

"I eat big pizza yum yum like."
-Josh Oakley, Smart

There you have it, folks.

Christmas Date

Dinner at Cornuto last night with my main man.

Romaine hearts with Caesar dressing, croutons
Bufalina pizza with mozzarella di bufala, tomato, olive oil, basil
Veal meatballs, tomato sauce, grana padano
Mezzaluna (Nutella calzone)

The food amazing... The service and ambiance, not so much :(

I'm an idiot...

...For not taking any pictures of all the fabulous food I've been treating myself to lately; I need to remember to do that, instead of inhaling said food immediately.

Maybe it's because work has been so incredibly unappealing lately that I need to put amazing flavors in my mouth-hole (could I have constructed that sentence a little better? Yes. But it's Friday, so I'm throwing intelligence to the wind).

Anyway, last week was Seattle Restaurant Week, and so Danielle and Leslie and I went to Staple & Fancy Mercantile. I would describe it as rustic coastal Italian. I included the "coastal" part because they basically kept shoving plates of seafood onto our table.... grilled sardines, anchovy-topped soft boiled eggs, fried oysters, tuna tartines...

Now I'm going t0 tell you about a new addiction: Sushi. Something's wrong with me. I can't get enough of it. And I've just begun to eat the actual raw stuff. I'm so in love with it. Moshi Moshi Sushi has amazingly fancy rolls. And that's where I went two days ago with Alex and Stacey. Also got fried octopus :)

Last night was totally unplanned: I went to Delancey. Finally! It's been voted the best pizza in Seattle. Which is kind of a big deal. And it's located on one of my favorite streets in Seattle (NW 70th, between 15th and 14th). I met Lindsey and Stacey there, and was surprised to see that the eatery was much less pretentious that I was expecting it to be. Their pizzas, for their great quality, are not as pricey as I expected them to be. The menu is small and manageable. We got margherita (my favorite), sausage with hot peppers, and cremini pizzas. And a grilled radicchio salad which was AMAZEBALLS.

But I don't want to say too much because I'm trying to utilize my restaurant blog, Pleasure & Necessity, which I haven't been keeping up very well. I'm trying! I'm going to get some contributors/guest posters to help me out. So head's up for that!

Staple and Fancy

Tonight I am SO EXCITED to eat a meal at Staple & Fancy Mercantile, a restaurant opened by one of Seattle's top chefs, Ethan Stowell. I've heard lots of good things about it. Staple & Fancy is participating in Seattle Restaurant Week, which means I get my three course meal for just $28.

Tonight...

I'm going to Canlis. Also known as my favorite restaurant of all time. You can read about my first experience at Canlis in two parts. Although I'm not going for a full-on dinner (because that would set me back around $200), I am very excited to enjoy a few cocktails (like the gorgeous one above) and some small plates. Also, it's fun to dress up and get treated like a princess--because the people of Canlis treat you like literal royalty. Seriously, every Canlis encounter I have, I usually look like this.

Introducing...

The Diary of a Pseudo Restaurant Critic

Yep, I have a new blog.

Your Table Is Ready

On Sunday, my mom and I had the pleasure of hearing former restaurant critic of the New York Times, former editor-in-chief of Gourmet Magazine, and author Ruth Reichl speak.

That isn't what Ruth looks like in real life. But I thought sharing this picture would be fun because one of the reasons Ruth became so renowned was because during her time as the NY Times restaurant critic, she would go to restaurants incognito so as not to be recognized and to get the treatment that regular folks would get. This meant that sometimes she would get treated very badly in certain hoity toity restaurants around the city. If they only knew who they were ignoring...

I loved what Ruth had to say about the tradition of going out to eat. As a restaurant critic she found it very important to inform and give people a better way to appreciate their restaurant experience. When one goes out to eat at a nice restaurant, they have the opportunity to step out of their everyday lives and become anyone they want to be. It is a special experience; so dress up! Order a bottle of wine! As Ruth said, "we all have a contract when we go out to an expensive restaurant..." Expect to get what you pay for: amazing service, along with amazing food. Canlis comes to mind when I'm writing this.

I loooove going out to eat. It is really fun. I love getting dressed up, ordering more than one course, getting treated well by waitstaff. Sure, I may not have a lot of money to go out to nice places often, but when I do have that opportunity, I always try to embrace it.

I'm excited to start reading Ruth's memoirs: Garlic and Sapphires, Tender to the Bone, and Comfort Me With Apples. She's a wonderful speaker, and a thoughtful and passionate woman.

Homegrown

Homegrown Sustainable Sandwich Shop had only been officially open a mere 40 minutes when Stacey and I arrived to get our paws on some of their gourmet goods. Foodies and Fremonters alike began streaming in steadily soon after.

Their locale is perfect: On Fremont Ave., amidst boutiques and coffee shops. And their cause is even more spot-on: "to create sandwiches out of sustainable ingredients but also to make sandwich creation sustainable itself."

Okay
, you're asking, that's honorable and all, but is the food good? You bet. I had half of a
flank steak sandwich (with grilled portobello, caramelized onions, bleu cheese, chimmichurri, and mixed greens on country french bread) and a cup of wild mushroom soup. Everything was so flavorful. And it only set me back eight bucks. And Stacey got a turkey, bacon and avocado sandwich, with Gouda, tomato, lettuce and aioli. She lurved it.

Being brand-spanking new and all, Homegrown understandably has a few kinks to work out. But that's definitely not deterring me; I'm already daydreaming about when I can go back... that chicken confit sandwich needs to get in my belly.
...

Also: We saw a celeb there. Such a big deal. Niels from "Beauty and the Geek" season 3 (see below). Apparently he works for a software company here in Seattle. Yah, I was pretty starstruck.
