The New York To-Do List

Josh and I found a place to stay in New York for three months. I think it's considered Morningside Heights, but I'm not sure. Anyway, it's in-between Upper West Side and Harlem, near the north end of Central Park. It's a really cute looking apartment, and I can't wait to see it in person in June.

I've already begun a list in my head of things to do in New York, both imaginary and real:

IMAGINARY:

1. Help Detective Olivia Benson solve a rape/murder case
2. Become Lena Dunham's best friend
3. Nanny Tina Fey's daughters
4. Dress like Annie Hall
5. Go to the artsiest Brooklyn parties
6. Shopping spree at Barney's
7. Become Anna Wintour's assistant
8. Play a ukulele on a fire escape
9. Sing "New York, New York, a helluva town" in a sailor suit
10. Fake an orgasm in Katz's Deli

REAL:

1. Have a picnic in Central Park
2. Eat bagels
3. Visit the Guggenheim, the Whitney, the Museum of Natural History
4. Eat pizza
5. Walk the Highline
6. Eat pastrami sandwiches
7. Hang out with my friends living there: Daniel, Nick, David...
8. Eat at Milk Bar
9. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge
10. Catch a few shows

I also have a Pinterest board dedicated to New York. It's mostly just restaurants I want to go to. That's just who I am.

Any other ideas, friends?

List the People You Admire

My Mom - Such a talented artist. An amazing mother. A woman who has been through a lot, but has chosen to start her life over with dignity and grace.

My little brother - I don't understand how he has suddenly become one of the wisest, most loving people I know. He's in the middle of a battle, and he's winning.

Moorea - My dear friend has built an amazing brand/business from the ground, up! Insanely talented. I'm so happy for her in all her accomplishments.

Julia Child - Just. Absolutely. Inspiring. She found her life-calling in her 40s. It's never too late to find success! She was a pioneer in the culinary arts.

Malala Yousafzai - A young girl who stood up to the Taliban for the right to get an education.

Kathrine Switzer - First woman to register and run in the Boston Marathon, in 1967. Got assaulted by the Marathon's director. She kept running.

Amy Poehler - Writer, comedienne, actress, activist for empowering young girls (Smart Girls at the Party!)

Beyonce - Beautiful, fierce, empowering, talented. Why WOULDN'T I admire her?

Lena Dunham - I love her voice and the way she represents young women of today. And her bodacious bod!

Grace Coddington - I love her vision and her creativity. So inspiring.

I can't think of 'em all... Lynn Yaeger, Peggy Guggenheim, Harvey Milk, Conan O'Brien, Ruth Reichl,  Sally Field, Kristen Gillebrand, Tavi Gevensson, ALL of the amazing teachers I've ever had, Louise Bourgeois, Michelle Obama, Joni Mitchell, Shirley Temple Black, Tina Fey, Iris Apfel, Cher, Doris Day, Hillary Clinton, Coco Chanel, Carmen Miranda, Diane Keaton, Isabella Rosselini, Jenna Lyons, Katharine Hepburn...

List your favorite quotes

"Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray." -Rumi

"My mother was right: When you've got nothing left, all you can do is get into silk underwear and start reading Proust." —Jane Birkin

"When Fortuna spins you downward, go out to a movie and get more out of life." -John Kennedy Toole

"It’s not wrong to want someone to love you. Most people are together just so they are not alone. But some people want magic. I think you are one of those people." — Broken English

"How can a woman be expected to be happy with a man who insists on treating her as if she were a perfectly normal human being?" -Oscar Wilde

"If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast." -Ernest Hemingway

"Without you, today's emotions would be the scurf of yesterday's." -Amelie

"The bottom line is that (a) people are never perfect, but love can be, (b) that is the one and only way that the mediocre and vile can be transformed, and (c) doing that makes it that. We waste time looking for the perfect lover, instead of creating the perfect love." -Still Life With Woodpecker by Tom Robbins

"Go into the arts. I’m not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven’s sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something." —Kurt Vonnegut

"Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself." -Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
